Rob Huff fastest in Free Practice 1 at the Hungaroring
Championship leader Rob Huff led the way in the first free practice session during the WTCC’s first visit to the Hungaroring.
Huff displaced team-mate Yvan Muller with a final flying lap at the end of the 30 minute session to lead a Chevrolet 1-2-3.
Norbert Michelisz’s local track knowledge served him well despite a 10kg increase in weight for his BMW 320 TC. The Zengö Motorsport driver was fourth fastest, just six-tenths of a second down on the pace setting lap time from Huff.
Track conditions were warm, but the pace was slower than yesterday’s test, with Alain Menu’s 1:56.858 still the best lap of the weekend so far.
Darryl O’Young was fifth fastest in the Bamboo Engineering Chevrolet Cruze, with Tiago Monteiro the fastest SEAT in seventh, just under a second down on the fastest Chevrolet.
The three new SR León 1.6Ts were consistent, with Fredy Barth, Michel Nykjaer and Pepe Oriola all between 1:59.6 and 1:59.8, just over two seconds off the pace.
Several drivers were warned for cutting the circuit in the session which run uninterrupted, though a spin for Urs Sonderegger in the final corner with 10 minutes to go saw the yellow flags deployed as he tried to point himself in the right direction and continue.
The next free practice session is at 11:30 CET.
