Dahlgren: If I have a chance, I’ll go for it

Robert Dahlgren’s best qualifying position of the season gets him right in the mix with the Chevrolets for the first time, and the 31-year-old Swede will take a shot at the win if it’s possible tomorrow at Oschersleben.

So far this season Chevrolet have dominated, taking 13 wins from 14 races, with just Tarquini spoiling that record holding off Alain Menu at Zolder in the second race with the reversed grid.

Now, Chevrolet’s unbroken run of front row lockouts has ended with the Volvo Polestar Racing driver securing second on the grid, outqualifying two of the Chevrolets on pace.

Robert Dahlgren is delighted with the qualifying result, especially since neither he or the team has ever been to Oschersleben before.

With a wet first practice session, and a dry second session and qualifying, both of race day’s possible conditions have been encountered by the drivers.

“I think in the wet we are there and in the dry we are there as well,” said Dahlgren to TouringCarTimes.

“Alright, now we’re second and maybe a bit better than we thought. Our target was to be the best of the rest, and now we’re up there and it’s really good.”

“We said alright, maybe if one Chevrolet has a result that’s not brilliant in qualifying then maybe we can beat one, but now that we’ve done two that’s brilliant, I’d rather do three next time.”

Oschersleben has an infamous characteristic of a 90 degree left first corner, where there has always been incidents in the past.

“In a way it feels like I would be better off being where Rob (Huff) is, and with those two on the inside it will make it very tight for me,” said Dahlgren.

The Volvo team has yet to score a podium result this season, starting the year on the relatively uncompetitive five-cylinder normally aspirated engine and only switching to the turbocharged engine at Brno. This is the second race weekend after that change that the Volvo is running without the increased penalty ballast from that change, but Dahlgren’s not planning on just settling for a podium.

“If I have any chance I’ll go for it, I’m not here to come high up in the championship. Races are for us in a way testing and racing against other people is important as well, if I get a chance to fight I will.”
