Huff not worried about losing points lead

Rob Huff isn’t too concerned about the possibility of losing the championship points lead to Chevrolet team-mate Yvan Muller tomorrow, who has qualified ahead of the Briton for both races, as long as the fight goes to Macau.

Rob Huff qualified in second place for race one, and will start seventh for the second race, two places behind Muller. Huff’s last pole position was at Monza, whilst Muller has now been on pole for three consecutive events.

“The first three qualifyings of the year when we’re on pole I didn’t make a mistake on any of the laps,” said Huff to TouringCarTimes, “but almost every qualifying since then we’ve made a mistake on our best lap.”

“On the second lap, I just pushed too hard into Turn 1, went a little bit wide on the exit and then that gave me a bit of oversteer into Turn 2 but we were still quicker on the lap. Without that moment at Turn 1, my engineer said I lost four-tenths, and we’re exactly four-tenths behind Yvan.”

With seven points the gap between first and second, Muller will take the championship lead if the first race finishes as the two Chevrolet drivers have qualified.

“If he wins race one then obviously we’re one point behind, and he’s ahead of me in race two (on the grid). At the end of the day I’m not worried about it too much. As long as as we’re pretty neck and neck going to Macau, I’ll be happy. I’ve won there the last four years, I’m very confident round there, so we’ll wait and see.”

Huff doesn’t expect the two will resort to racing each other too hard, despite the ever increasing threat to his championship chances from last year’s champion Muller.

“If you start pushing and shoving team-mates, you’re going to get the sack, you don’t want to be doing that. And I don’t want to win races like that, I don’t want to be win championships like that. I don’t want to be winning a championship with everyone going ‘well, it’s only because you fired him of'”, I want to win it on pace and win it on being consistent.”
