Sergio Hernández targeting 2012 WTCC return

2008 and 2010 WTCC Independents’ champion Sergio Hernández is hoping to return to the World Touring Car Championship next season, after a trying season in the International Superstars series.

The Spanish driver, also a race winner with ROAL Motorsport at Brno in 2009, has been racing for Campos Racing in the top Italian touring car series, but hopes to return to the WTCC where he raced for four years between 2007 and 2010.

“I’m working now with sponsors to come back next year,” said Hernández to TouringCarTimes.

“My experience in another championship has been not really good so I’m hoping to be back with Proteam or some team in the WTCC next year, I feel it’s my home so I should be here.”

Several teams have recently critisized the performance balancing measures in the Superstars Series, which has seen the BMW teams struggle to compete against Mercedes-Benz and Maserati.

“The organisation of the championship is not so good at the moment as they are trying to keep the cars the same, but it’s impossible to make a Mercedes AMG equal with a (BMW) M3, there’s a difference of 120bhp so it’s so difficult to hold the distance, it’s a crazy championship at the moment.”
