Agustín Canapino takes second win for Chevrolet at Trelew

Agustín Canapino has taken his second career TC 2000 victory at Trelew for Chevrolet ahead of Néstor Girolami, whilst a third place for Mariano Werner sees him close up in the championship standings.

Canapino won his qualifying heat in the morning to ensure a pole position grid spot, whilst Ford-YPF’s Fabian Yannantuoni took the second sprint win to share the front row.

Equipo Petrobras driver Néstor Girolami started well from row two along with Mariano Werner to move up into second and third and chased down the 21-year-old Chevrolet driver from Arrecifes, Argentina.

There was a short safety car period on lap 14 as one of the independent Renault Méganes span out. At the restart, Peugeot Cobra Team driver Facundo Ardusso and Equipo Petrobras’s Mariano Altuna made contact, both careering off the track whilst fighting for the outside of the top ten positions. The off dropped them down to the back of the pack, never to recover.

The two Fiat Lineas of Emiliano Spataro and José María López continued to battle hard for ninth place, with López clearly held up behind his team-mate. On lap 16 after a light tap to the rear of Spataro’s Linea, López snuck through into ninth and closed in on Toyota driver Matías Rossi, but was unable to pass the championship leader before the finish.

Canapino went on to take the second victory both for himself and Equipo Oficial Chevrolet’s new Cruze, with Girolami in second and Werner third.

With Werner finishing third, and championship rivals Leonel Pernía and Matías Rossi down in sixth and eighth respectively, Werner moves up to second in the standings, just seven points behind his Toyota team-mate.

The next round of the championship is at Tunin on October 2nd.
