Colin Turkington confident for China after Japan
Colin Turkington left the Japanese WTCC races at Suzuka with two podium finishes in the Yokohama Independents’ Trophy, but the Northern Irishman is aiming higher for the next race in China.
“We had a good weekend, but Japan was mainly about preparation for China. Now we sort of know the car, we have it in a good place for me and hopefully we can be fast in Shanghai,” said Turkington to TouringCarTimes.
Turkington claimed third among the privateers in the first race and second in the second race after a hard fight with Michel Nykjaer.
“I had more pace, but I couldn’t find a way past cleanly. It would have been easy to force my way past. But I am not involved at all in the championship and you have to have respect for what the other guys are doing. I put him under pressure, but I wasn’t going to do anything silly,” said Turkington.
The east course of the Suzuka proved not to be a favorite among the drivers with few opportunities to overtake on.
“It is quite monotonous, once you come out of the first bend, you are in fourth gear for most of the lap, just accelerating, braking, accelerating and braking,” said Turkington.
Suzuka was Turkington’s second taste of the turbo charged BMW 320 TC. Turkington first drove the car for Wiechers Sport in the races at Donington Park earlier this year.
“The turbo engine is improved since Donington. It is not as much on and off any more, it is easier to drive,” said Turkington.
Turkington returns to Asia and the WTCC races in Shanghai next weekend with higher expectations.
“I’m going out to do my best, but it is not easy to just drive one or two races for a new team. I think if I can position my self in qualifying, then I would aim for the podium,” said Turkington.
