Colin Turkington pleased with strong season end
Colin Turkington impressed by being in the very top of the WTCC races in China, as well as securing a double Yokohama Trophy victory in his final race weekend of 2011.
“It was pleasing to finish off the season with a strong result,” said Turkington to TouringCarTimes.
The Northern Irishman qualified third for the first race, just 0.157 seconds from pole position.
“We were competitive straight away on the friday test and we just fine tuned the car during the weekend. I was able to concentrate on finding a good race balance as it was along race with 25 laps,” said Turkington.
WTCC raced on the short 3.3km Tianma circuit outside Shanghai and Turkington says that his experience from the Swedish circuits in this year’s STCC helped him.
“The circuit was very much like a Swedish track in the characteristics, quite narrow and not too many straights. So I felt comfortable straight away,” said Turkington.
The first race saw Turkington finishing second after a close race with Chevrolet driver Alain Menu.
“I really enjoyed the races, but it is quite a difficult position for me to be in, racing with guys involved in the championship fight. You don’t want to be too aggressive, ruining someones chances of winning the title,” said Turkington.
Turkington finished fourth in race two, being right in the thick of a six-car battle.
“Particularly the second race was tough, as soon as you tried to attack someone in front, you became vulnerable from behind. It was not easy to make the right move, but I was able to pick up a couple of places in the end that I am pleased with,” said Turkington.
