WTCC adds driver adviser to the stewards for 2012
Following on from the practice introduced in Formula 1, in the 2012 FIA World Touring Car Championship, a touring car driver will sit on the stewards panel to assist an all matters both on track and off.
Previously, the three stewards of the meeting have made their decisions alone after hearing from the involved parties, but from next year a touring car driver will be requested to join the stewards meetings at each race meeting. The driver will not have the right to vote on the panel, but is there to help provide a drivers’ perspective in any decision.
This follows a high profile practice introduced in Formula 1 over the last two years.
The driver must have “no connection of dependency with any manufacturer or make of car entered in the Championship”, and is to “advise the Panel and/or the Race Director on all questions pertaining to motor sport in general and to the behaviour of the drivers and competitors on the track in particular”.
