Muller goes from seventh to win race two in Morocco
Chevrolet once again claimed all top three positions in the second WTCC race at Marrakech, but this time with the internal order reversed as Yvan Muller won ahead of Rob Huff and Alain Menu.
“I couldn’t belive before the race that this was possible as it is hard to overtake here. I was really quick in corner one and two and that was the place to overtake,” said Muller.
The Chevrolet drivers made their way quickly through the field with Muller being up on the podium on lap four.
But it was pole man James Nash holding the lead for the first half of the race with Franz Engstler right behind. Muller made his way past Engstler with some contact going in to the chicane and claimed the lead from Nash a lap later, just driving past the Ford driver on the straight.
Huff and Menu followed Muller shortly after, leaving Nash to defend from a hungry BMW pack consisting of Tom Coronel, Stefano D’Aste and Engstler.
Coronel had a hard time getting past Nash, but finally got past as Nash made a mistake coming in to the chicane and D’Aste followed Coronel through. D’Aste then put hard pressure on Coronel, with the Dutchman having a big moment at the exit of one of the chicanes, nearly putting his BMW in the wall.
Coronel managed to keep on to fourth with D’Aste claiming fifth and the Yokohama Trophy’s victory. Nash clung on to sixth, improving team mate Tom Chilton’s, who retired from this race, record of the best ever WTCC result for the team.
Pepe Oriola put hard pressure on Nash at the end, but had to settle for seventh ahead of a battered Engstler in eighth. Tiago Monteiro and Darryl O’Young rounded off the top ten.
