Alain Menu upset with Engstler for ruining final run
Chevrolet’s Alain Menu was disappointed with third on the grid after looking set to possibly snipe pole position from team-mate Yvan Muller at the Hungaroring.
Menu had shown strong pace throughout the day, and looked like he would have been able to break into the top two, as he was five-thousandths of a second up on Muller’s time in sector two but came across Franz Engstler in the final sector which caused him to lose time.
“I think I was slighty up on Yvan just before the third sector,” said Menu, “But unfortunately Engstler I think it was, was on an in-lap. I was flashing my lights behind him but braking for Turn 12 he stayed right on the line, so I had to go all the way on the inside and brake on the inside so that cost me maybe not the pole but for sure second place, people should look in their mirror.”
Menu had decided to abort his previous lap, which would have been good enough for second, to try again to take his second Hungarian pole.
“The lap previous to that one I knew it was a good enough lap but not for pole position so I decided to come in to abort the lap, I knew I had time to fit another set of tyres and do it right at the end…and it was looking good until the third sector.”
