Michelisz: “The happiest day of my life”
Norbert Michelisz is on cloud nine after winning at the Hungaroring in front of packed grandstands of fans out to support the 27-year-old as he took his second WTCC victory, and closes in on the lead of the independents’ championship.
Michelisz took the lead after a great start in the rear-wheel drive BMW from the standing start race two from fifth on the grid, and pulled a gap first to his independent rival Pepe Oriola in the SEAT, who was later passed by the Chevrolet of Alain Menu.
“Today is probably the happiest day of my life so far,” said Michelisz after the race. “I’m very grateful for everyone who’s helped me achieve the result today, I think I had the perfect car and this was the key in yesterday’s qualifying and in the second race today.”
“I was not expecting to go to P1 for the first corner, but I accepted the gift so I was then was just trying to maintain the focus.”
“I was trying to do a clever race so I was not pushing 100%, I was pushing 100% on the second lap as I wanted to get a gap to the second place position but from then on when I realised I had the pace…I calmed down.”
“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” added Michelisz in regards to the record turn out for the second consecutive year at the Hungaroring for the WTCC. “I don’t know how to thank everyone who came here and supported me, as I’m dreaming still.”
