Yvan Muller fastest in second free practice at Portimão

Yvan Muller was fastest in the final free practice session of the day in Portimão. The Chevrolet driver left it to the last moment to take the top spot away from team-mate Alain Menu by three-tenths of a second with Rob Huff completing the top three.

The session was uninterrupted, with just a few spins for Gábor Wéber in his last scheduled appearance of the season for Zengõ Motorsport, as well as Alberto Cerqui and Pepe Oriola in their BMW 320 TC and SEAT León respectively.

With the track temperature increasing, times were slower than they had been in the first session where Gabriele Tarquini set the benchmark in his SEAT León. Muller’s time was a 1:55.590 compared to Tarquini’s 1:54.675 in FP1.

The fastest SEAT in FP2 was the independent Lukoil Racing Team SEAT León of Aleksei Dudukalo, who was just a tenth of a second faster than team-mate Tarquini.

Franz Engstler was best of the BMWs in sixth with Tiago Monteiro eighth fastest in the SUNRED SR León 1.6T, the last driver within a second of Muller.

Pasquale Di Sabatino was the fastest of the independent Chevrolet Cruzes in ninth, whilst Tom Boardman was now up to 16th in the new SEAT León WTCC after bedding in the new engine in FP1.

James Thompson was 19th fastest in the Lada Granta, whilst the two Ford Focuses didn’t reproduce their pace from FP1 and were down in 21st and 22nd places, just over 2.4 seconds off the pace.

The next session is qualifying at 14:15 WEST/BST.
