Monteiro, Barth and Boardman lose race one points
Tiago Monteiro, Fredy Barth and Tom Boardman were all given 30-second penalties applied in race one which drops them out of the points. Hugo Valente and James Nash also received similar penalties in the race for cutting the corner at Turn 4
Tom Boardman had finished in a season’s best position of sixth in the Special Tuning Racing-run SEAT León, with Tiago Monteiro taking Honda’s best result so far with seventh in only the Civic’s second race meeting.
Both drivers had made good progress up the field, with Boardman starting 20th and Monteiro 17th.
Fredy Barth had finished in tenth place on his WTCC return, his first touring car event since last year.
Barth’s SUNRED team-mate Hugo Valente had originally finished in 15th place, whilst Arena Motorsport’s James Nash had been forced to retire his Ford Focus due to damage sustained in a collision with Fernando Monje’s SEAT.
All five drivers were given penalties for cutting the course at Turn 4, albeit in avoidance of the incidents which were taking place further ahead, namely the incident involving Pepe Oriola, Colin Turkington and Tom Coronel.
This promotes Colin Turkington to sixth place in race one and Alberto Cerqui to seventh. Mehdi Bennani is now classified in eighth place in his Proteam BMW, whilst the two Engstler BMWs of Franz Engstler and Charles Ng complete the top ten, with Ng picking up his first points of the season.
Tom Chilton is now classified in 11th place, just one spot out of the points in the only Ford Focus to finish the race after Nash’s retirement. Nash’s result therefore is unaffected by the drive-through penalty, whilst Hugo Valente only drops one spot from 15th to 16th, falling behind Norbert Michelisz who benefits by picking up an extra point in the independents’ standings.
