Rob Huff: “It’s much more than I could dream of”
Rob Huff heads to the season finale in the best position possible to win the 2012 drivers’ championship in Chevrolet’s final season in the WTCC, after a win and a second place in Shanghai.
Rob Huff finished in second place behind Alain Menu in the first race after starting from fourth on the grid. The British-driver had managed to pass both Norbert Michelisz’s BMW and Chevrolet team-mate Yvan Muller out of the first corner, and with Muller eliminated from the race, held station behind Menu to move into the lead of the championship with the points for second place.
In race two, despite starting ahead of his two team-mates, Huff lost ground at the start, with both Menu and Muller getting ahead of him, but with the two drivers coming together on lap eight, Huff was able to nip through and take his first win since the USA race two months ago, and head to Macau where he won both races last year with a 35 point lead in the standings.
“This was a fantastic weekend for the team and a fantastic weekend for me,” said Huff. “Second and first is just what I needed. It’s much more than I could dream of this morning when I woke up.”
“Race 1 was pretty lean. I took second position at the start and maintained it until the end, while in Race 2, I had a pretty scary moment when the lights went off for the start. My clutch got stuck and I almost stalled, but I quickly found the right pace again after a couple of corners. I overtook Yvan and Alain when they made contact.”
“I now have a 35-point lead in the championship going to Macau, which is really what I had hoped for. Macau is a place where I’ve always been quite competitive, so I feel very encouraged.”
