Darryl O’Young OK after heavy crash in qualifying

Darryl O’Young will start from the back of the grid tomorrow after crashing out at the start of qualifying today at the Slovakiaring.

The Hong Kong driver crashed out at Turn 9 and hit the barrier, causing severe damage to the right side of his ROAL Motorsport BMW 320 TC.

The car will be repaired overnight and will make the start despite not setting a time within the 107% cut-off. O’Young will share the final row with Tom Boardman, who is set to have a third engine change of the weekend after another failure in qualifying.

“I had a bit of oversteer,” said O’Young to TouringCarTimes. “I was on track, on line, just as I got to the exit I got a little bit of snap oversteer and went on the grass, and that part of the circuit there’s no run off, the wall comes back onto the track.

“I was going straight but at fifth gear speed. I tried to bring it back on the track and that’s when I lost the rear, so it was either that or go head on to wall, so I chose sideways. It’s a shame because we were quick this

BMW’s renewed pace this weekend is thanks in part to the manufacturer providing carbon fibre doors for the teams to run which has saved 20kg in weight. Unfortunately there are no spares available so O’Young will be forced to revert to the conventional doors for race day.

Previously unseen footage of the accident is shown below in Tom Coronel’s qualifying round-up.
