Michelisz fastest in warm up, whilst Chilton wrecks

Norbert Michelisz topped the morning warm up in the Zengõ Motorsport Honda Civic ahead of the two SEATs of Pepe Oriola and Rob Huff, whilst Tom Chilton caused heavy damage to his RML Chevrolet, going off and hitting the barrier at Turn 2.

Michelisz was the only driver to set a time under 2:12 in the short 15 minute session, half of which saw yellow flags out at Turn 2 after Tom Chilton went wide at Turn 2 in the Chevrolet Cruze and slammed into the barrier, with the wreckage taking several minutes to be recovered.

René Münnich almost replicated Tom Chilton’s crash later in the session, just missing the wall and able to return to the pits.

James Thompson was fourth fastest in the Lada Granta, which has found some more pace overnight after struggling throughout Saturday. Tiago Monteiro was the fastest of the works Hondas in fifth, just ahead of team-mate and pole-sitter Gabriele Tarquini, with Tom Coronel the best placed BMW in seventh and Yvan Muller the fastest Chevrolet in eighth.

Tom Boardman set five laps, none of which were timed, doing installation runs in what’s his third engine change of the weekend after the team’s engine failed for the second time this weekend in qualifying. The team are working with SEAT to diagnose the problem and plan to do a similar shakedown in race one, where Boardman will start last.

The first race today is at 14:30 CET.
