Yvan Muller happy with “tricky” record breaking pole position
Yvan Muller took his fourth pole position in the 2013 WTCC season at Moscow as the rain started to fall, and now moves clear as the all-time pole position record holder on the Championship.
The Frenchman was able to outpace Tom Coronel’s BMW, who had looked set to threaten the two RML Chevrolets in qualifying, whilst the rain had begun to fall in the first few minutes of the second part of qualifying.
Muller’s pole position earned him another five points in the drivers’ championship, and so he extends his lead by four over Honda’s Gabriele Tarquini, but also moves one pole position clear of the Italian in the record books with 18 career pole positions in the WTCC, with Tarquini on 17 and former Chevrolet team-mate Alain Menu on 15.
“That was tricky out there,” said Muller. “The rain was coming in quite heavy so I had to really concentrate. It would have been easy to make a mistake so I am very happy to be on pole, which is crucial here, because overtaking on this track is not easy.
“We’re in the best shape for the first race tomorrow so I hope we can continue the momentum and translate it to a win. The forecast is suggesting more rain so it will be an interesting race and I am sure one that fans will enjoy.”
