Gábor Wéber returns to the new SEAT León Eurocup
Former World Touring Car Championship driver Gábor Wéber will compete in the revitalised SEAT León Eurocup series this year with B3 Racing. The Hungarian competed in a partial season of the WTCC in 2012 with Zengõ Motorsport as the team-mate of Norbert Michelisz.
The 42-year-old, who won the 2010 SEAT León Eurocup drivers’ title in the series final season, also with Zengõ, last raced in the WTCC at Portimão in 2012, driving the team’s second BMW 320 TC.
Wéber was unable to secure the budget for a return to the WTCC later in 2012 or 2013, with Zengõ focussed on their new programme as Honda’s only customer car last year with Norbert Michelisz. With the budgets for the 2014 season pushed even further with new manufacturers and new technical regulations, Wéber believes the SEAT Eurocup is his best competitive option for this year.
“I’m happy for SEAT renewing the Eurocup, that means I have the opportunity for this year to race a factory built car against strong opponents for a bargain compared to WTCC,” he said.
“I’ve completely skipped last year, so I can hardly wait to be at the wheel of the new León, supported by B3 Racing’s professional team and my former WTCC engineer, David Bári. Being the last champion of Eurocup I can only have one goal: fighting for victories and for the championship.”
B3 Racing will field a second car in the Eurocup for Hungarian driver Edina Bús, the champion of the Hungarian Lotus Ladies’ Cup in 2011 and 2012, which supported the WTCC rounds at the Hungaroring.
