FIA confirms 22 car entry for the 2014 WTCC season

The FIA has confirmed that 22 entries have been lodged for the 2014 FIA World Touring Car Championship season, with a number of drivers set to be announced in the coming weeks for the Championship’s TC2 class for legacy Super 2000 cars, while the Onyx Race Engineering team’s programme will not happen this season.

16 cars will take part in the TC1 class, with six in the TC2 class which is for cars which conform to the 2013 Super 2000 regulations. Liqui Moly Team Engstler will field two cars, one for Franz Engstler, with the team’s second driver to be announced within a few days.

Campos Racing will field three SEAT León WTCCs in the TC2 class, so far only confirming John Filippi as one of their drivers.

Swedish outfit Nika Racing have also filed an entry with their Chevrolet Cruze 1.6T. The team fielded Michel Nykjaer, Rickard Rydell, Hiroki Yoshimoto and Yukinori Taniguchi during the 2013 season.

Teams which entered the 2013 season and have not filed entries, include Wiechers-Sport, Special Tuning Racing, bamboo-engineering, Tuenti Racing Team, PB Racing and champions RML, though they will support seven cars on the grid with four independent teams.

Onyx Race Engineering, the British team run by Mike Earle which announced a five-year programme in January, have confirmed they will not be contesting the 2014 season.

The 22 car entry is just one less than the number of cars entered in 2013, despite a complete change in regulations for the 2014 season in respect of the TC1 class, which will have 16 cars for the first round in Morocco and a 17th car, a Citroën C-Elysée, added for Ma Qing Hua later in the season.
