René Münnich happy with new Chevrolet after career best result
Münnich Motorsport team principal and driver René Münnich took his best result in any session in qualifying at Marrakech today, sixth on the grid in the ALL-INKL.COM Chevrolet Cruze TC1, and says he’s much more comfortable with the Chevrolet than the SEAT he drove last season.
The 36-year-old broke into the top ten for the first time in FP2 with ninth, and then followed that up with a lap of 1:45.541 to go sixth fastest in the second part of qualifying, securing sixth on the grid for race one and fifth on the reversed grid for race two tomorrow.
“The problem for me is I’m not a professional race driver, and I need some time to get used to something,” said Münnich to TouringCarTimes. “With the old car every lap was different, it was oversteering and understeering, whereas this car is consistent and this helps get me into the flow, just to drive like I want.
Looking ahead to the races where he will start in the top ten for both races, for the first time since he started up the order in the controversial Salzburgring race weekend last year, Münnich is cautious about his chances.
“The race is long and as I know from the past, this place is where strange situations can often happen in the first corner, so we’ll see.”
The team put together their programme at the last minute for Münnich and new team-mate Gianni Morbidelli, whose car is going to be rebuilt overnight, and hopes that the team will be able to shine particularly in the latter part of the season.
“The decision to do this was a little bit too late, so we’re a little bit behind with spare parts etc. but by the second half the season we should have everything there and I’m sure Gianni (Morbidelli) can go for really good results at the end,” he said.
