Dusan Borkovic to miss Macau finale due to hand injury
Campos Racing’s Dusan Borkovic will be forced to skip the last event of the season at Macau due to his hand injury getting worse in the Asian leg of the championship.
The Serbian regularly suffers from pain in his hand, which left him worried back at Suzuka already as Borkovic had an off in Free Practice 2. When his Chevrolet RML Cruze oversteered, the sudden movement of his hand triggered the pain coming from two old injuries he had back in his karting career.
“Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to deal with my injury and it got worse in Japan,” said Borkovic. “My hand was hurting in Beijing and there was Shanghai the next weekend and Japan shortly after that and I didn’t have time to treat it medically the way I should have. It swelled up now and hurts a lot. There is no need to force and risk an even greater injury in Macau, and after consulting a doctor and my team I made a decision not to compete in this street race.”
History shows how easy it is to have an accident in Macau, and the Serbian driver decided not to risk making the injury worse. Borkovic had two major accidents at the age of 9 and 13, after which he even risked an amputation, which luckily didn’t happen.
“It is a hard decision for me, but I know it’s for the best. I can’t wait to start preparing for next season, especially because the season for me ended on the great note by reaching 2nd place in Suzuka, my first WTCC podium. I will work hard with my team to continue into the next season with that spirit.”
Borkovic ends the season with 41 points, 22 of which scored in Japan. No replacement has been announced as of now for the #98 car.
