James Thompson enjoying WTCC comeback
James Thompson is back in the FIA World Touring Car Championship, deputising for René Münnich at Münnich Motorsport. The Brit is back after almost one year off the track, driving the new-for-him Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1
“I love the feeling of driving the car,” said Thompson to TouringCarTimes. “Obviously I need a bit more track time to get my confidence back and learn the car, which is a completely different world compared to the Lada.”
The Brit set no goals for his WTCC comeback and is going to take it step by step: “I just want to have fun and go with the flow. There’s no point in setting goals for a race in these conditions, I just need to pace myself every session and things will come our way. I know I’m doing what many people can only dream of, doing a World Championship race.”
Despite the absence of goals, Thompson is confident ahead of the weekend and enjoys his time at Münnich Motorsport: “We did not use any new tyres today, I just wanted to get as many miles as possible under my belt. For tomorrow we will have two sets of new tyres, which may help the learning process. The most important thing for me is I’m enjoying myself, I’m in a very good team with great people, they could have called anyone and yet they chose me, so I am very proud. I’m sure we will improve session by session, and then come what may.”
James Thompson last drove a TC1 car in Hungary last year before he was replaced at Lada.
