Néstor Girolami set to test for Volvo next week
Reigning Argentinian Super TC 2000 champion Néstor Girolami is understood to be testing for Polestar Cyan Racing in one of their Volvo S60s at the Termas de Río Hondo circuit next week, as the World Touring Car Championship organisers continue to search for an Argentinian heir following José María López’s impending departure from the championship.
Girolami, who raced twice last year in the championship in Slovakia and Portugal for the Swedish Nika Racing team, is understood to be joining Volvo for a post-race test at the Termas de Río Hondo circuit, where the eighth round of the 2016 season takes place this weekend.
Speculation has been rife for the past two weeks that Girolami, who now races in the Brazilian stock car series, would be joining the Volvo factory squad in a test as part of an evaulation for their 2017 programme.
“Actually, I don’t know how many chances I have to race in WTCC, but my desire is real,” said Girolami at a press conference for the preceding round of the Super TC 2000 championship in Buenos Aires. “If I have the chance to test for Volvo, it will be great. I’m in touch with people from the series, but nothing is sure at the moment.”
The WTCC promoter, Francois Ribeiro, confirmed in a press conference ahead of this weekend’s race that “an Argentinian driver” will be testing for Volvo, effectively joining the dots.
“You can count on me to do everything I can to keep Argentina on the calendar and keep also Argentinian drivers in the championship,” said Ribeiro. “Immediately after this race Volvo stays in Termas to test an Argentinian driver. Come to Termas on Saturday and Sunday and you will see him.”
Girolami then posted on his social media account that he’d arrived at Termas de Río Hondo, with his racing helmet, along with Lada Sport driver Gabriele Tarquini.
