Tom Coronel to the back of the grid after engine change

Tom Coronel will start the opening race at Motegi from the back of the grid after his ROAL Motorsport team were forced to change the engine after the second free practice.

The Dutch driver, who has had most of his WTCC success in Japan at what he refers to as his home circuit after many years racing in Japanese Formula 3 and Formula Nippon, over-revved the engine in practice, which requires a change of engine as part of the agreement with engine-builders RML.

As a result, he will start from the back of the grid in his Chevrolet RML Cruze for the first race on Sunday (although in his video he believes it’s just a ten-place penalty), but qualifying will still be key as it will set his position for the main race.
