Francisco Abreu wins Race 2 at Portimao and closes in on title battle

Team Novadriver’s Francisco Abreu scored his second win of the day at Portimao, the final race weekend of the TCR Portugal and Iberia championships.

Standings leader Francisco Mora couldn’t get his SEAT León TCR repaired in time after an incident in the first race and did not take part in the second race, with Abreu now threatening Mora’s reign in both classifications.

It was an easy victory for Abreu, ahead of Edgar Florindo (SEAT) and Ricardo Leitao (SEAT). José Cautela was fourth at the wheel of his SEAT León TCR, followed by the Audi RS 3 LMS of Rafael Lobato.

André Lavadinho was sixth and winner in the TCR 2 class with his SEAT Léon MK2, followed by Simplício Taveira (Volkswagen Golf) and Armando Parente (Honda Civic Type R).

The result proved disastrous for Mora whose lead in the TCR Portugal series has been squashed to just 17 points over Abreu ahead of tomorrow’s two races and with a total of 54 points still in play.

In the TCR Iberian series, Abreu has taken the championship lead with 128 points, with 37 in play as each driver will only be able to retain the points of their best result from the two races tomorrow.

Race 3 is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9:10 CET.
