Stefano Comini still on the hunt for a drive in the 2018 WTCR

Two-time TCR International Series drivers’ champion Stefano Comini says he’s still searching for a drive for the inaugural season of the new World Touring Car Cup.

The Swiss driver has spent three years in the top tier of the TCR championship, each season competing with a different team and car from the VAG-built range, starting off in a SEAT run by Target Competition, and then racing for Team WRT with a Volkswagen before switching to a Comtoyou Racing-run Audi.

The 27-year-old hopes to find a good drive which would allow him to fight for the title, regardless of which series he takes part in.

“At the moment I’m still looking for a drive,” said Comini to TouringCarTimes. “I want a serious project which will allow me to be competitive, because I’m hungry for more wins.”

The Swiss is looking further afield than TCR as well, as long as the programme allows him to fight at the front.

The preferencs however is to take part in the new WTCR series.

“Of course, WTCR has to be the goal,” he said. “I know the field will feature many high-profile names and it would be fantastic to battle it out with the best in the sport.

“Given my experience and success with TCR cars, I’m confident I could be very competitive. That said, any serious project would be interesting for me.”

Having been known to be a controversial character away from the track, Comini says he’s eager to prove he’s matured and changed his character over the past year.

“I know a career in motor racing is influenced by so many factors,” he said. “I have already started to behave in a different way midway through last season; I have lost four kilos already. Hopefully I will be able to make use of a better fitness and healthier lifestyle in a racing car.”

Comini has won 12 races in his TCR International Series career, with four more victories in the TCR Benelux Touring Car Championship.
