Thed Björk disappointed after dropping the ball in qualifying

2017 WTCC champion Thed Björk had a weekend to forget in Hungary, with two ninth-place finishes his own points opportunities at the Hungaroring in his YMR Hyundai, which saw him drop from second to sixth in the championship standings.

A set-up issue on Saturday saw him lose ground in Race 1, while mistakes in qualifying saw him start the second and third races from a lowly 18th on the grid, with his drive through from that position to ninth in Race 3 his saving grace of the day.

“I had an issue with the mapping at the start of Race 1, and the engine just died, and after that I was off set-up-wise completely…which meant the race was damage limitation,” said Björk to TouringCarTimes.

“In qualifying on Sunday, the set-up wasn’t the issue, first I made a mistake, and then there was a yellow flag, and that was it, over.

“In the first race we tried some different things and it was OK, but in the last race we found it, but then I got up to (Rob) Huff, but then it was game over. He’s good and not easy to overtake.”

Björk wasn’t writing off his championship challenge after one bad weekend however, reflecting back to the same time last year.

“It can shift really fast, like I’ve just had a really bad weekend, it can come to them as well as there are still eight races left,” he said. “I had it here last year as well, that’s why I hoped it would be better this year. I’m not worried yet.”
