Nathanaël Berthon critical of driving standards in Hungary

Touring car newcomer Nathanaël Berthon voiced his dissatisfaction with the driving standards in the midfield during the weekend’s races at the Hungaroring, saying things need to improve or he’d leave the championship.

Berthon was the best-placed of the four Comtoyou Racing Audi drivers during the weekend, at a circuit where the RS 3 LMS seemed to struggle, with Team WRT’s Jean-Karl Vernay just managing to get in the points after winning first time out in Morocco.

“It’s always good to be the first of your team, as we are a team of four drivers and the other drivers are good drivers,” said Berthon to TouringCarTimes. “The team worked really well, so it’s really frustrating to not have good results. We’re too far from the others and this is really frustrating.

“However, the behaviour of the other drivers during the race is something I’ve never experienced,” he added. “This is only my second race in touring cars, and I’ve realised you can do pretty much what you want without being penalised… I hope it’s something that will change in the future, as it’s not good for a world championship.

“It looked like an amateur race, honestly. It was like this in Marrakech already, and today it’s the same, so in the future I’ll maybe change my ways or stop the championship, one or the other.”
