Yvan Muller: “It’s far too early to think about the championship”

Yvan Muller moved up one place in the championship standings after victory at the expense of his YMR team-mate Thed Björk in the first race in Germany, but the four-time WTCC champion says it’s still too early to think about the title.

Muller jumped ahead of Björk and held him off for the victory in Race 1, leading a perfect 1-2 result for his team in the first World Touring Car Cup race at the Nordschleife, and with Gabriele Tarquini failing to finish, Muller finds himself just 14 points behind in the championship standings heading to Saturday’s races.

“If there is one race to win, it’s this one,” said Muller on his first victory since Motegi 2016 with Citroën.

“In the race I did a good start, and then after than I just did what I could to keep them behind. With this long straight, it isn’t over until the end of the last straight,” he added.

On his championship charge, the Frenchman added:

“It’s far too early. We’ve only done seven races and there still 23 to go, so so it’s far too early to think about the championship.”
