Yvan Muller furious with Norbert Michelisz after Zandvoort collision

World Touring Car Cup points leader Yvan Muller has put the blame firmly at the door of the Hungarian for the two drivers’ collision at the start of Race 1 at Zandvoort.

The two came together at the exit of Hugenholz on lap one, with BRC Racing Team driver Michelisz on the inside of the corner with Muller on the outside in his YMR-run Hyundai.

As the two locked together, Muller was run into the barriers and launched over the barrier, while Michelisz was trapped his left side and out of the race with damaged suspension.

Muller blasted the Hungarian over the team radio, and hadn’t changed his view after the race.

“I was on his outside, and when he saw me on his outside and he did a crazy manoeuvre and went flat out and straight on,” said Muller to TouringCarTimes. “ I was on my brakes, you can see there are two big marks on the floor, but he was pushing, pushing, pushing until I was in the barrier.

“You can see he was on the outside, and what he tried to do was to go a bit wide and put me in the grass, but he went too far.”

The team have a tough turnaround to get the car ready for Monday’s races, with qualifying scheduled for 8:30 CET.

“I think the boys will not sleep,” he added. “We’ll see if the car can be repaired when we get the car back.”

Michelisz said the accident occurred as it was too tricky to go around the outside, and denied deliberately pushing Muller, and that the second contact was due to damage.

“It was quite unfortunate as after the hit, the suspension broke and I didn’t have any control, but after we touched there was nothing I could do,” Michelisz told TouringCarTimes.

“He decided to go for the outside as I think he wanted to gain some positions there, and a corner like that it’s up to the driver. I stayed on the inside because I felt it was too risky to overtake the car in front on the outside.

“I’m sorry for the guys as now it’s extra work, but I’m quite sure we’ll have a proper car for the races tomorrow.”
