Yvan Muller: “There is no one capable running the BoP”

Yvan Muller has criticised the organisation of the Balance of Performance measures for the WTCR, stating that the responsibility for the calculation should sit with the FIA.

The championship leader qualified in 21st for Race 1 at Zandvoort, his worst qualifying of the season, 1.5 seconds off the pace in his Hyundai i30 N TCR, which was hit with a 2.5% reduction in power and a 20mm increase in ride height ahead of the weekend as part of the TCR’s latest BoP measures.

Hyundai also carry 60kg compensation weight based on their lap times from the first three events, and significantly struggled in qualifying with Michelisz the fastest of the four drivers in qualifying, setting the 14th fastest time.

With speculation on whether the Hyundai’s BoP would be revised ahead of Monday’s races, the Frenchman replied:

“I don’t think they’ll change this “BoR”, it’s a balance of results, not BoP,” he said to TouringCarTimes. “They’ll keep to their judgment, but from the beginning I think we all knew the judgment was wrong, and when we want to run a world class championship, we need capable people to do the BoP, and at the moment there is not. I think we have to leave that to the FIA maybe.”

TCR promoter Marcello Lotti defended the latest BoP measures. “You have to consider that there is 60kg of compensation weight, and if you look at Michelisz, he was only eight tenths behind, and on a track like this, that’s easily worth that,” said Lotti to TouringCarTimes.

“After the compensation weight changes in the next races, then it’ll be clear that the BoP is equal.”
