Rob Huff smashes lap record in second practice session at Macau
Rob Huff set the best time of all in the final practice session on Thursday in his Sébastien Loeb Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, leading the field by over half a second.
Huff showed he was going to be a threat from the start of the session, with his first lap time in the 2:31s, just behind the time set by Jean-Karl Vernay this morning in his Team WRT Audi RS 3 LMS.
Huff improved his time on his second run, before there was a flurry of improvements as the Hyundais surged forward, with first Norbert Michelisz and then Yvan Muller going fastest, with Muller the first driver to set a time in the 2:30s in a TCR-specification car around the Guia circuit.
Huff responded back with record setting time of 2:29.766, the first time under 2:30 in a TCR car, and the only driver to achieve that in this session.
His closest challenge came from Münnich Honda driver Yann Ehrlacher, who was second fastest, half a second back, with Muller third fastest.
Jean-Karl Vernay put in a late charge despite an error at the final corner to improve to fourth in his Audi, while Mehdi Bennani’s SLR Volkswagen was fifth fastest.
Esteban Guerrieri finished the session sixth in his Münnich Honda, with Thed Björk’s YMR Hyundai seventh, followed by the two BRC Racing Team Hyundais of Norbert Michelisz and Gabriele Tarquini, with Ma Qing Hua in the Boutsen Ginion Honda completing the top ten.
There were two small brushes with the wall, both at Paiol, with Comtoyou Racing’s Denis Dupont and Champ Motorsport’s Lam Kam San damaging their Audi RS 3s.
The fastest of the Alfa Romeos was Kevin Ceccon in 12th, the best-placed Cupra was Pepe Oriola in 13th, and the top Peugeot was Aurélien Comte in 19th. The top wild card driver was André Couto in the MacPro Racing Honda, 24th and 6.3 seconds off the pace.
Qualifying 1 for Race 1 is next up at 8:50 CST tomorrow (1:50 CET).
