Mikel Azcona puts Cupra on top in interrupted first Slovakiaring practice

Mikel Azcona put the new Cupra León Competición on top of the first free practice session of the World Touring Car Cup weekend at the Slovakiaring. The session was red flagged as his Zengo Motorsport team-mate Gábor Kismarty-Lechner crashed into the tyre barriers.

Azcona topped the session ahead of three Audi drivers. Tom Coronel was second fastest, three tenths of a second behind, with his Comtoyou Racing team-mates Gilles Magnus and Nathanael Berthon in third and fourth position respectively.

Jean-Karl Vernay was fifth fastest for Mulsanne, just over six tenths of a second from the top time.

Münnich Motorsport team-mates Néstor Girolami, Esteban Guerrieri and Atilla Tassi occupied positions six, seven and eight.

Bence Boldizs claimed his so far best result with ninth position, right ahead of Lynk & Co Cyan Racing driver Santiago Urrutia who rounded off the top ten, 1.259 seconds from Azcona.

All Hyundai drivers finished outside the top ten, with Luca Engstler fastest of the four in 14th position, over 1,5 seconds from the top time.

Gabriele Tarquini went off in spectacular fashion at Turn 2, damaging his suspension and had to stop on track, finishing 18th.

Kismarty-Lechner escaped unharmed from the incident that saw his Cupra sustaining heavy frontend damage. The session was resumed with 11 minutes left on the clock.

Thed Björk could only complete four laps during the session due to a driveshaft issue.

The second free practice session starts at 13:45 CEST.
