Esteban Guerrieri set to extend Honda stay

Esteban Guerrieri is set to extend his spell with Honda into a fourth successive World Touring Car Cup season in 2021, regardless of the outcome of this weekend’s season finale at Motorland Aragon.

Having first joined Honda for the final races of the 2017 World Touring Car Championship after being drafted in to replace the injured Tiago Monteiro, Guerrieri then signed up for a full season with Honda in the first season of WTCR, where he was placed with the Münnich Motorsport team.

Guerrieri finished third in the inaugural season for the series before finishing second to Norbert Michelisz last season, with the 35-year-old holding the same position heading into the final race meeting of the current campaign.

Speaking ahead of the weekend, Guerrieri vowed to push hard to overhaul current leader Yann Ehrlacher in the standings and then all but confirmed that he would be back as part of Honda’s line-up again next season.

“Ehrlacher has good team-mates supporting him, but I trust my team-mates a lot,” he said. “We have to see what happens in qualifying to start with, as if any of us at Münnich or Lynk & Co are outside the top ten, it will be good for the other team.

“Lots of circumstances can play for or against us, but I have to give my best to battle for the title. I knew it would be tough after my DNF at Zolder, but I’m happy to have recovered, and to reach the season finale with a chance.

“I fully trust in my team and I’m happy to say I’ll stay with Honda in WTCR in 2021.”

Honda has yet to confirm its 2021 racing programmes or drivers, with official announcements to come in the new year.
