WTCR reveal eight round 2021 schedule

Organisers of the World Touring Car Cup have revealed details of the 2021 schedule, with plans in place to return to Asia for the final events of the campaign.

With COVID-19 having resulted in an amended 2020 schedule focused solely on Europe, the series will seek to return to a more ‘regular’ calendar for the new season, which will begin in Hungary in mid-May to kick-start the European leg of the campaign.

Events in Slovakia a week later, Germany, Portugal and Spain will follow, before the series enters the usual summer break.

Subject to any restrictions on global travel, the series will then return to Asia in October for the final three rounds, starting in South Korea before an event at a yet-to-be revealed circuit in China.

The season finale will then return to the famous streets of Macau in late November.

The eight round calendar will feature a total of 16 races, which each meeting running as a double-header with two races.

“Together, Eurosport Events and the FIA did a good job within these unprecedented times to deliver the WTCR 2020 season, ensuring continuity of the series and support to the teams,” series promoter François Ribeiro said.

“Still, 2021 will be another challenge where cost efficiency shall dictate most of our decisions to make sure everybody stays onboard, and that WTCR still offers a great racing environment and global promotion at an affordable budget for our teams.”
