Tom Coronel heads Audi 1-2-3 in red-flagged practice at Motorland Aragón
The third round of the 2021 FIA WTCR season started in earnest with Comtoyou’s Tom Coronel (Audi RS 3 LMS) leading the first free practice session, which was cut short when the Dutchman stopped on the track with four minutes left due to a technical issue.
Coronel set a best lap time of 2:05.555 in warm and sunny conditions, with fellow Comtoyou driver Frederic Vervisch in second place, 0.421 seconds behind. Nathanael Berthon, also driving an Audi, finished third, 0.826 seconds off the pace.
Lynk & Co Cyan Racing driver Thed Björk was the only driver to break the Audi domination in fourth place, 0.863 seconds behind Coronel. Gilles Magnus was right behind, 0.923 seconds from Coronel.
Local hero Mikel Azcona took his Cupra Leon Competición to fifth place, close to 1.3 seconds from the top time, with Lynk & Co drivers Yann Ehrlacher and Yvan Muller next.
Engstler Hyundai driver Luca Engstler was the fastest Hyundai driver, placing his Elantra N TCR in ninth place, 1.466 seconds off the pace. Santiago Urrutia, who shares second place overall with Muller and Tassi completed the top ten, 1.5 seconds behind Coronel.
The Honda drivers were in the lower half of the field, with Tassi fastest in 15th position.
The second free practice session is scheduled for 12:45 CEST.
