Mikel Azcona on hectic WTCR and TCR Europe duty this weekend

Cupra driver Mikel Azcona will face a tight schedule this weekend, with the Spaniard trying to secure the TCR Europe title in Spain and at the same time race in the WTCR in the Czech Republic.

Azcona drives a Cupra Leon Competición for Volcano Motorsport in TCR Europe and leads the standings with a 53-point margin ahead of the season finale at Barcelona.

If he finishes ahead of title rival and Honda driver Franco Girolami in the first race, he would become champion.

The Spaniard is currently placed eighth in the WTCR where he races for Zengo Motorsport, 31 points behind leader Yann Ehrlacher with four rounds to go.

“The plan is to be at Most on Friday, and do the free practice and qualifying sessions there,” Azcona told TouringCarTimes. “I would then return to Barcelona for Saturday, where I would do the qualifying session and Race 1.

“If we clinch the TCR Europe title on Saturday, I will then return to Most that day to participate in the WTCR races on Sunday.

“We can do this because of the six-hour FIM World Endurance Championship event taking part on Saturday at Most, so we (WTCR) don’t have any track activity on that day,” explained Azcona.
