Yvan Muller: “We deserved this pole position”

Cyan Racing’s Yvan Muller scored his first pole position of the year at the Pau Arnos circuit, host of the sixth round of the WTCR season.

The Frenchman is pleased to have claimed the highest qualifying honour on home grounds.

“For sure, if there was only one pole position to do during the season it would be this one,” said Muller after the session.

“Initially at the beginning of the year that race was not planned, we should be in Asia at this moment, because of all the complications we are here and it’s a good thing.

“Of course very pleased with the pole position and very pleased with the pace and the team work we all did. We deserved it,” added the four-time champion.

Muller is not thinking too much about the race tomorrow, rather focussing on the setup work: “If I do a good start it will be a second good point and then if I can stay out for the race at the front then I would not say it would be done, but it can be.

“Many things can happen still, at the moment I will just enjoy the pole position for another half an hour and then I will work on the set-up of the car for tomorrow.”

Pole position means starting Race 1 from P10 due to the reversed grid rule, with Muller thinking about bringing the car home to have a chance in the second race.

“For Race 1 will start in P10, so it is important to save the car to be safe for Race 2, which can be complicated with the first corner, the chicane, anything can happen there,” added the Cyan Racing driver.

“We saw last week at Most what happened, so I just hope everybody will stay calm and clever.”
