Rob Huff tops very close opening free practice at Motorland Aragón
Zengo Motorsport driver Rob Huff was the fastest driver in a very close first free practice session at Motorland Aragon, host of the fourth round of the 2022 FIA WTCR season.
The Cupra Leon Competición driver set a best lap time of 2:06.359, beating Cyan Racing’s Thed Björk (Lynk & Co) by just three-thousandths of a second, with Comtoyou Racing’s Nathanaël Berthon (Audi) a further 0.001 seconds behind.
Norbert Michelisz was the fastest Hyundai driver, taking his Elantra N TCR to fourth place ahead of Cyan Racing’s Santiago Urrutia who was 0.165 seconds off the pace.
Local hero Mikel Azcona was sixth, with Engstler Motorsport’s Attila Tassi right behind.
Reigning champion Yann Ehrlacher set the eighth fastest time and was followed by his team-mate Ma Qing Hua, with Comtoyou Racing’s Gilles Magnus completing the top ten.
The Münnich Motorsport Hondas struggled, with Esteban Guerrieri in 14th place and Néstor Girolami in 17th position. It should be noted that Girolami set purple sector times on one of his aborted attempts towards the end of the session.
The FIA WTCR returns to the track at 12:30 CEST for the second free practice session.
