BMW take shock pole at Road Atlanta
James Clay takes a surprise pole for BMW at Road Atlanta, his first in the SCCA World Challenge Touring Car Series.
Unfortunately, James lost the coin toss, which means team mate Nick Esayian will actually start first on the road with the top five reversed.
James Clay took advantage of BimmerWorld team mate Seth Thomas’ draft to get the fastest time
“It was Seth’s [Thomas] draft that got me there. I gave him a draft early on in the session and it worked out well for him. Then, we came in and let things cool off. Once they did, we gave it one more go with me in his draft and that’s what did it. It was a long time coming.”
Nick Esayian was ecstatic at ‘winning’ the pole:
“I’ve never started from the pole before,” Esayian said enthusiastically. “I’ve been close before. But, my two teammates are already giving me a hard time about it. The BMWs, with rear drive, will give us a great launch. I’ve had some great launches in the past. So, I just plan to get another one tomorrow. Hopefully, James, Seth and I can share a podium together.”
Championship leader Jason Saini will start eighth, whilst RealTime Racing’s Kuno Wittmer, despite setting the fourth fastest time, will share the front row with Esayian and will be favourite for the win after setting the pace in practice.
