17 cars for World Challenge opener at St. Petersburg

The World Challenge Touring Class features a field of 17 cars which will race with the GT and GTS categories at this weekend’s first round.

The reigning champion driver Robert Stout and his team DG-Spec Scion both do not return to defend their titles, but in their place are a number of new competitors, with four marques in total represented.

The new car to the championship is the Volvo C30 of K-PAX Racing, a team which dominated the GT class with their S60 last year. For 2011, K-PAX will field cars in both categories. The team’s drivers are Robb Holland and Aaron Povoledo.

Joining in with the HPD-built Honda Civics is Canadian Touring Car and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge title holders Compass360 Racing, with Tom Ehlen and Lawson Aschenbach on driving duties.

Many drivers who fielded full campaigns last year return, with last year’s runner-up Eric Meyer returning in his Mazda RX-8 and Shea Holbrook in her Honda Civic Si.

Volkswagen are the fourth brand represented with both its Golf GTI and Jetta models. New team Brimtek Motorsports has impressed from the start with their GTI for Tristan Herbert, claiming pole position for the first race of the season.

The first race gets underway at 11:50am EST on Saturday before the qualifying sessions for the Firestone Indy Lights and IZOD IndyCar Series take place.
