Fatality for Phillip Yau in the Macau Touring Car Cup
Look Fong Racing Team driver Phillip Yau has tragically died after a crash in the CTM Macau Cup qualifying session, which took place this afternoon at the circuit.
Phillip Yau was on his second flying lap in his Chevrolet Cruze LT, a former WTCC works car, before he crashed out at Mandarin, the fastest corner of the circuit and judged to be the fastest on the entire WTCC calendar, and was trapped in his car whilst the rescuers attempted to come to his aid.
The safety team had to cut through the car from the rear door due to the position of the car, and then extracted him to hospital by helicopter, but it was later confirmed he didn’t survive his injuries.
The fatality is the second at the 59th Macau Grand Prix meeting, after Luis Carreira was fatally injured in the first Motorcycle qualifying session on Thursday afternoon, crashing out at Fisherman’s Bend.
