Paul Poon leads China Dragon 1-2 for Macau Cup
Paul Poon has led a China Dragon Racing 1-2 in qualifying for the CTM Macau Touring Car Cup this weekend, leading team-mate and last year’s race winner Samson Fung in the session which was hit by tragedy.
Jeronimo Badaraco of Song Veng Racing qualified third in his Honda Accord CL7. Poon set his best lap in the final moments of the session in the team’s Chevrolet Lacetti, displacing team-mate Fung from pole. Badaraco’s time was good enough for third, but team-mate Leong Ian Veng, who also took part at the Shanghai round of the WTCC two weeks’ ago, was forced back into the pits after one lap.
CTCC regular Andy Yan, who was fastest in free practice on Thursday, qualified fourth in his Team Pro Spec-run Chevrolet Lacetti with a time of 2:44.209.
The session was overshadowed by the death of Phillip Yau, driving for Look Fong Racing in one of the team’s two Chevrolet Cruzes, the same team which has entered Eric Kwong this weekend and for the last round of the WTCC in Shanghai. Yau crashed out at Mandarin and suffered a broken neck. His car caught fire shortly afterwards, and he was evacuated to the nearby Centro Hospitalar Con de São Januário but didn’t survive his injuries.
The CTM Macau Cup race will take place on Saturday 17th November at 11:20 MST.
