Sunny Wong scores first win in CTCC in Guangdong
Teamwork Motorsport’s Sunny Wong was on his first Super Cup 2.0T race at the Guangdong International Circuit in Race 1, with his Citroën C-Elysée crossing the line ahead of Tomas Engström, driving for Haima Z1 Racing, and his Citroën team-mate Alex Hui.
Wong led the race throughout, while Julio Acosta was the first retirement of the race after contact and spun out in the middle of the track.
Wong’s Teamwork team-mate Alex Hui had started second, but was passed in the mid-part of the race by Engström, the Swede making his CTCC debut, and fell down the order, but was able to recover to finish third.
Rainey He was the best-placed of the Ford drivers in fourth, 16 seconds down, with the other Changan Ford Focuses of Martin Cao, Andy Yan finishing sixth and seventh while Gao Hua Yang retired.
The Shanghai VW 333 Racing Volkswagen team had a race to forget, with Zhang Zhen Dong finishing eight, but the other Lamando GTS drivers all failing to make the finish.
In the Super Cup 1.6T race, Honda bounced back from a poor qualifying session to score a 1-2 result, with championship leader Martin Xie making the most of the reversed grid to take victory and extend his championship lead, finishing 1.6 seconds ahead of team-mate Henry Ho, with Jason Zhang completing the podium for Kia.
