Zheng Zhen Dong wins in Shanghai and leaps to championship lead
Shanghai VW 333 Racing driver Zheng Zhen Dong won the second race of the weekend at Shanghai in the China Touring Car Championship’s Super Cup 2.0T class, and after a disastrous weekend for the heavily-ballasted Ford drivers, leap frogs them all and goess from fourth to first in the standings.
Zheng faced tough competition from the two Haima Z1 Racing M6s of Chen Xu and Tomas Engström during the race, eventually winning by just over a tenth of a second ahead of the Swede, with BAIC Senova driver David Zhu finishing in third position.
Race 1 winner Cai Yue retired on the first lap due to contact, as did Volkswagen driver Adam Morgan and Star Racing’s Tan You Zi.
Rob Huff’s race ended on lap six as the factory Honda made a one-off appearance in the CTCC with BAIC Senova, crashing out with contact with the Linky Audi of Dennis Zhang on lap six.
Sunny Wong would finish as the best placed of Teamwork’s Citroëns in fourth, with He Zi Yian fifth for Haima.
The best-placed Changan Ford was that or Martin Cao in eighth, one spot ahead of Andy Yan, with former championship leader Rainey He down in 11th.
As a result, Zheng now moves into the points lead, two ahead of Rainey He and six ahead of Andy Yan heading to the season finale, which is provisionally set to take place at the Jun Chi International Circuit, subject to confirmation of both the change and the date, with the Yancheng circuit not ready to host the scheduled finale.
