Paul Poon takes pole position for the Macau Touring Car Cup race

Teamwork Motorsport driver Paul Poon placed his Teamwork Motorsport Peugeot RCZ on pole position for Sunday’s Macau Touring Car Cup at the Guia circuit, outqualifying Son Veng Racing driver Filipe de Souza’s Chevrolet Cruze, with his own team-mate Samson Fung in third.

The two Peugeot RCZs were fast throughout the 30-minute session, which saw early drama as the engine of the Ford Fiesta of SLM Racing driver Ip Tak Meng expired on the main straight, obscuring the pursuing cars’ vision.

Jeronimo Badaraco, also in a Son Veng Racing-run Chevrolet, briefly moved to the top of the timetable, before Poon pulled back ahead with a time of 2:45.354.

Poon’s closest threat would come from Son Veng’s Filipe de Souza, who’s stepping down from his regular drive in TCR Asia in order to challenge for the Macau Cup Race. De Souza’s time was just over a second away, while Samson Fung was unable to improve in the final minutes after crashing his Peugeot out on the way up the hill.

Badaraco would drop to fourth, with Leong Chi Kin’s Peugeot fifth quickest.

The Macau Touring Car Cup takes place at 8:30am on Sunday 20th November.
