Matthew Howson takes last-gasp pole in TCR Japan at Autopolis

Matthew Howson has taken pole position for the TCR Japan Touring Car Series, after a final flying lap in his KCMG Honda Civic TCR saw him deprive Takuro Shinohara, who looked set to take pole in his Hitotsuyama Racing Audi.

The Japanese driver was leading most of the 30-minute qualifying session by a full half a second over Shogo Mitsyama’s Green Brave Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR in his Audi RS 3 LMS.

However, a final lap from Matthew Howson saw the Briton put the KCMG Honda on pole by over four-tenths of a second, while Yu Kanamaru also made a last-minute improvement in the Team Goh Models Honda to go third in his Honda.

Mitsyama ended up the only driver within a second of Howson’s time in fourth, with Takeshi Matsumoto’s RT – Team Wakayama’s Volkswagen rounding out the top five.

The first race is scheduled for 16:15 JST (09:15 CEST).
