Johannes Leidinger wins as Klien falters in Spa
Liqui Moly Team Engstler’s Johannes Leidinger won the second race at Spa-Francorchamps, but the team were deprived of a pair of 1-2 finishes after Christian Klien’s BMW suffered a mechanical problem on the second lap and retired from the lead of the race.
Klien started from pole position courtesy of his victory this morning and this time managed to hold the lead ahead of Leidinger at the start, but the Austrian suddenly slowed on lap two and made his way into the pits to retire at the end of the lap, effectively handing Leidinger an easy victory.
The fight in Division 1 for Super 2000 cars was again very strung out with Leidinger leading comfortably from Thate Motorsport’s Jens Weimann, with RSK-Motorsport’s Ardi Van der Hoek taking the final spot on the podium.
The main battle to watch throughout the race was again in Division 2, with the two Glatzel Racing Ford Fiestas of Ralf Glatzen and Kai Jordan battling throughout the race for the lead, swapping the position several times throughout.
Jordan was able to pass Glatzel’s Fiesta 1.6v on the penultimate lap and hold off his team-mate to take the win, with Yury Krauchuk’s third place ensuring a 1-2-3 lockout for Glatzel Racing on the Division 2 class podium.
Julia Trampert was able to steal ninth from ETH Tuning Peugeot driver David Griessner after a daring pass in her Engstler Ford Fiesta at the bus stop chicane on the final lap, finishing the race just behind new team-mate Thomas Krebs.
Jens Weimann continues to lead the standings on 30 points, but Leidinger has now closed to within just four points after Spa and heading to the next round on June 9th at the Sashsenring.
In Division 2, Glatzel extends his lead in the standings after his second place finish in race two.
