Michal Matĕjovský grabs pole position for ETCC finale at Brno

Krenek Motorsport’s Michal Matĕjovský claimed pole position for the final round of the FIA European Touring Car Cup at the Automotordrom Brno, and will start ahead of team-mate Petr Fulín, who is chasing his first ETCC title this weekend.

Matĕjovský’s pole came as a surprise after Fulín had led every session so far this weekend. Fulín had set a time of 2:12.710 on his first flying lap after just over ten minutes into the session, which had initially grabbed pole position away from the SEAT León Supercopa of Ferenc Ficza.

Then with just over five minutes to go, Matĕjovský improved his time to 2:12.479, grabbing provisional pole away from his team-mate, which prompted Fulín to respond, but the fellow Czech driver could only find another few hundredths of a second and was still two-tenths of a second down on Matĕjovský’s time.

Matĕjovský therefore secured his first pole position of the season, and picked up three additional points in doing so. Fulín picked up two points for second and with Dušan Borković the third fastest of the S2000 drivers, and fourth overall, and with Fulín’s championship rival Mat’o Homola fifth quickest, Fulín extends his points lead to ten points ahead of the Slovakian before tomorrow’s two races.

Aurélien Comte was the second fastest of the Single-Make Trophy class cars in qualifying in his Galaxy Racing SEAT, and so moves up to joint third in the standings sharing with Black & White Racing’s Nikolay Karamyshev.

Tuenti Racing Team’s Jordi Oriola moved one point closer to SMT points leader Mario Dablander, and is now just six points behind him in the standings.

Kevin Krammes, already crowned the Super 1600 class champion back in July at Pergusa, claimed his fifth class pole of the season for Ravenol Team GENA, outpacing the Team Lux Motor Ford Fiesta ST of Gilles Bruckner by just over a second.

The first ten lap race takes place on Sunday at 11:25 CET, with the second race following immediately after.
