Christjohannes Schreiber wins again in Hungary as team-mate crashes on last lap

Christjohannes Screiber won the second race of the day at the Hungaroring, while team-mate Peter Rikli lost out on the final lap after the Honda driver crashed out at Turn 3.

Just as in Race 1, the Hondas had a lightning start, with Peter Rikli blasting past both the LEIN Racing SEATs of Mladen Laslucis and Fabio Mota to lead into Turn 1.

Igor Stefanovski was making fast progress, and the Macedonian was up to second on lap two, but the SEAT driver was soon forced to serve a drive-through penalty for a false start.

At the start of lap three, Race 1 winner Schreiber passed Lalusic’s SEAT to make it a Honda 1-2, and the Serbian continued to fall down the order, with both the Krenek SEAT of Petr Fulín and the Zengõ SEAT of Zsolt Szabo getting ahead of him a lap later at Turns 13 and 14.

Fulín and Szabo were now embroiled in an exciting battle for third, but it all came to an end of lap seven, as Fulín forced Szabo wide at the exit of Turn 3. The Hungarian lost control of his car as he rejoined and collided with Fulín, span across the track and hit the barrier hard, with the safety car deployed.

During the incident, Alexandr Artemyev had moved up to third in the Baporo SEAT. The race restarted after Szabo’s car was cleared, with the top three pulling away.

Norbert Nagy was able to pass a stricken Petr Fulín to claim what would become third, as Peter Rikli slid off the track and into the barriers on the final lap, handing team-mate Schreiber his third consecutive race victory.

Artemyev kept the Swiss driver honest on the final lap, but was unable to get past.

Schreiber now extends his lead in the standings to 40 points, 15 clear of Petr Fulín, with Nagy and Rikli tied in third, four points behind.

The next round of the ETCC is the joint-event at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in two weeks’ time.
